Bella thought she must be crazy to agree to meet with Murphy’s partner, Jackson. What could he possibly want with her? When she first saw Jackson, he hadn’t looked too happy to learn that she was mixed up with Allison and Marianne. Bella sensed that he wanted to protect her somehow and wondered why. Frankly, knowing the law enforcement’s history of physical abuse, did she even want to get involved with one in any way. Thinking she might be unfair, she had to remind herself of what she’d seen while working the emergency room as an intern.

Seeing Detective Jackson coming toward her into the pub area of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Bella involuntarily drew in her breath. He was impressive as he turned heads and made his way through the scattered cocktail tables. He was undoubtedly handsome, and his overpowering physique was threatening just by existing. When his eyes met hers, there was a flicker of interest before it disappeared. Again, Bella wondered why he wanted to meet.

He nodded in greeting and formally asked, “May I join you?”

Bella responded in a teasing manner, “If you insist.” Jackson didn’t laugh as she had expected him to. “Please do,” she added.

A waitress appeared and asked, “What may I get you?”

“Ladies first,” Jackson said, waving in Bella’s direction.

“A glass of pinot noir, please.”

“And you, sir?”

“A virgin Bloody Mary, please.”

After she left, Jackson turned to Bella. “I thought it would be best to meet here away from the station. That way, no one will bother us.”

“Oh,” replied Bella, unclear why that would matter.

Jackson could see Bella’s confusion. “Sorry, you have no idea why I wanted to meet with you, do you?”

“Not even a little bit,” she responded.

The waitress returned with their drinks. After she left, Jackson asked, “How long have you known Allison Sullivan?”

“Long enough that I consider her to be my friend. Why?”

“We’re keeping an eye on her because we think her roommate might have gotten mixed up in something, and I felt I should warn you. We both know how it can look for anyone black to be involved,” he stated sullenly.

“What kind of something did Susan get involved in?” she asked, worried about Allison’s safety.

“Susan befriended Laurie Naimo, girlfriend of Mafia’s Frank Angiulo. Although he and his brother Jerry were arrested in 1983 for racketeering, they’re still trying to hold the reins of power in the North End. We know that’s changing, and power struggles with the Irish and others taking over what used to belong to the Angiulo brothers are causing killings.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Laurie Naimo admitted to us that Susan thought it would be exciting to date someone in the mafia and wanted her to set it up, but Laurie said she never did. We think Susan arranged a date with someone trying to break into the North End mafia or what is left of it. By knowing Laurie, we think that Susan might have pretended to be more involved with the mafia than she was.”

“Is that why
